Multiple Sclerosis with Dr. Robert Giombetti

Today on MD-VOD, Dr. John Kennedy is joined by neurologist, Dr. Robert Giombetti to discuss multiple sclerosis. Together they examine the cause of MS, who is at risk, the symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and available medications, treatments and therapies. They further discuss the consequences and the realities of living with MS, including insurance coverage and related costs. And in a special segment, we are joined by Emmy award winning TV host, Montel Williams, who has been living with MS since 1999.

Today over 400,000 people in the U.S are living with multiple sclerosis, with 200 more people diagnosed every week. This disease is known to affect people of all ages, but symptoms typically present themselves in people between the ages of 20 and 50. MS causes disruption of nerve signals in the central nervous system which can cause a variety of complications.

The most common symptoms of multiple sclerosis that you should look for are:

• Fatigue
• Numbness
• Walking, balance, and coordination problems
• Bladder dysfunction
• Bowel dysfunction
• Vision problems
• Dizziness and vertigo
• Sexual dysfunction
• Pain
• Cognitive dysfunction
• Emotional changes
• Depression
• Spasticity

Both Dr. Giombetti and Montel stress that it is best to start with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise when addressing multiple sclerosis. Currently, there is no cure for MS, but there are many effective medications that help reduce flare ups of the various symptoms and improve the quality of life for those living with MS. They note that this is a commitment and that compliance is key when taking any medication, however.

So join us as we simplify this common and treatable disease and arm you with the tools and information you need to combat multiple sclerosis for yourself and those you love.
