Today, as many as 5.1 million Americans may have Alzheimer’s disease. It is the most common form of dementia among the elderly. Alzheimer’s is caused by plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. This leads to a degeneration of certain centers of the brain, primarily the ones responsible for memory.

• Memory loss that disrupts daily life
• Challenges in planning or solving problems
• Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work, or at leisure

• New problems with words in speaking or writing
• Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
• Decreased or poor judgment
• Withdrawal from work or social activities
• Changes in mood and personality
Dr. Kheradyar points out that it is the patient’s family members and those that are closest to them that usually notice the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.
