Post Show Bonus Chat: Visual Health

Today on MD-VOD, Dr. John Kennedy is joined by expert ophthalmologist, Dr. Brian Boxer-Wachler to answer you facebook and twitter questions. Together they examine the cause of various visual health complications, who is at risk, the symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and available medications, treatments and therapies. They further discuss the consequences and the realities of living with these complications, including insurance coverage and related costs.

Worldwide, between 300 million and 400 million people have problems with vision and approximately 50 million people are totally blind.

The leading causes of blindness include complications from:

• Diabetes
• Macular degeneration
• Traumatic injuries
• Infections
• Cataracts
• Glaucoma
• And inability to obtain corrective eyewear

Dr. Boxer-Wachler points out that, as with most conditions, prevention is the best practice.  Everyone, including children, should develop a habit of protecting their eyes by wearing sunglasses when going outside.
