Addiction with Dr. Cassidy Blair

Today on MD-VOD, Dr. John Kennedy is joined by licensed psychologist, Dr. Cassidy Blair to discuss addiction. Together they examine the cause of addiction, who is at risk, the symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and available medications, treatments and therapies. They further discuss the consequences and the realities of living with addiction, including insurance coverage and related costs.

Addiction can be linked to both substances, such as alcohol and drugs, as well as various behaviors, including gambling, eating, and sex.

The most common signs of addiction that you should look for are:

• Extreme mood swings
• Changes in sleep pattern
• Changes in energy
• Weight loss or weight gain
• Secretiveness
• Lying
• Stealing
• Financial instability
• Changes in social groups and activities

Dr. Blair points out that it is typically the family and friends of an individual who are primed to spot these changes in behavior that may indicate an issue with addiction.

In many situations, expecting someone to quit the behavior on their own is not only unrealistic but also potentially dangerous.  It is best to see a team of experts who can help you deal with both the psychological issues of the addiction, as well as your body’s physical dependency on the substance or behavior.

So join us as we simplify this common and treatable disease and arm you with the tools and information you need to combat addiction for yourself and those you love.
